Intended learning outcomes

After being approved in this course unit, the students should be able to:

  1. Understand the definition of biosensor, its main elements and the areas where biosensors are used;
  2. Understand the structure, biological function and reactivity of the bioreceptors typically used in biosensors;
  3. Understand the principles of the transduction techniques used in biosensor technology;
  4. Know the methodologies used for bioreceptor immobilization;
  5. Classify the biosensors regarding the used bioreceptor and transduction technique;
  6. Know the typical biosensor designs and also differentiate between direct and indirect detection modes;
  7. Know the historical evolution of this technology, namely the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation biosensors used in blood glucose measurement;
  8. Know the recent developments in biosensors, especially in what the conjunction of this technology with nanomaterials it concerns.
